About Me

Hilary Smith
Still seeking, sometimes finding, always found. Hilary is the rector of Holy Comforter, Richmond VA. She has served as parish priest, spiritual director, and retreat leader in the Diocese of Virginia since 2000. She values silence, prayer, community, service, and the radical welcome of all. Not being reared as Christian, but coming to faith as a young adult, she loves to welcome newcomers to the Church and those returning after time away. Helping church members deepen their spiritual lives and discover God's call to them is a focus for Hilary. She supports the ministry of the laity with enthusiasm. Preaching and pastoral care are central to her life as a priest. She loves to help nurture the community life of our church. Issues of community and belonging, and the role of religion in our world today, are of importance to Hilary. Her spirituality has been influenced significantly by her association with the Jesuit Center in Wernersville PA, where she has made an annual seven-day, silent, directed retreat since 2003. In 2011, she did the 30-Day Spiritual Exercises at the Jesuit Center, and the 10-day Intensive Centering Prayer Retreat in Snowmass CO.
